I've come to the following conclusions, in a nutshell:

* Heavy list is not for me until I improve my core strength and repair my knees. Especially the "repair the knees" part. Combat archery might be OK, but I am otherwise not capable of doing heavy list at this body state without serious potential for self-injury. This is honestly a relief. I have too many hobbies as it is.

* Unarmored remains awesome. Worked on some German drills under Johann's guidance, which were a kick and a half. Would like to try them with the rapier, too. I can think of ways to slightly modify the buckler drills to practice the "cone of steel" for rapier. Woot.

* Did not actually get to play with rapiers last night, but all of the other purchased equipment seems solid and sound for rapier purposes. The gloves are absolutely not heavy enough for unarmored, and we both will be ordering a set for that purpose.

Met a bunch of cool people, too. (: Overall a splendid sweaty time; I got a great workout, too.

Oh dear ...

Here come the holidays. There goes me. *poof*

I'll catch you people when I can, but I'm about to be insanely busy. I mean ... I canceled a massage, OK? insanely busy.
leanne: (Default)
Yes, there were holidays. Yes, we went to Disneyland yesterday. Yes, even while we were both sick (not very) -- it was a family trip we've had lined up for months.

Yes, I'm supposed to be mural-painting on Friday, so I expect to continue to be scarce for the next half-week at least. (And yes, we had a great time, sick and all.)

I think I fixed my sourdough starter, using some advice from the web and a bit of patience.

I have a loaf set out to rise tonight. It should theoretically be ready sometime between 8 and 11 am tomorrow. In the meantime, I made some really tasty pancakes with the starter I would have otherwise discarded -- hence the confidence about having fixed the starter.

The sourdough site I used recommended running the starter on the counter for 30-90 days to develop the flavor completely. I can see where more time would mean more complexity. We'll see how it continues to play out.

Wow. Um.

We blew through 10 pounds of Halloween candy by 7:40. o_O

I guess next year we'll need to double that!

You are smart peoples and I know you're all squared away for whatever the weather decides to throw at you. No nagging from me. Just wanted to say:

All my best wishes for your safety and no property damage. Love you all.

My in-laws are visiting. I was insufficiently prepared -- they had been planning to have breakfast at the hotel, but Mary can't eat anything there. So I've got extra mouths to feed for the next few days for more meals than I'd anticipated, with more restrictions than usual (no sugar at all, no grains aside from whole wheat/multigrain) and no chance to go shopping.

Bring it on.

I spent a chunk of yesterday whacking back one of the butterfly bushes. Had I known that it was going to be a three-lawn-bag-plus-greens-can deal, I might have waited a day or two, but noooo. So yeah, three lawn bags. Go me?

Pondering doing the A&S 50 challenge, haven't decided what yet. I would like to be able to make the target deadline (the 50th anniversary), but don't want to do anything too easy or too hard. Link here for interested peoples. http://artsandsciences50.org/index.html

Not feeling well. Been fighting allergies for months, but I think this one's a cold.

Meh. ):

Of which I know there are at least two and possibly more ...

OK, so if you're intending to play a C on the flute, what is the right way to support the flute with the rest of your hands? I have been mostly just holding it tightly under the left forefinger, between the forefinger and the hand, which makes that joint very achy. That strikes me as a suboptimal way of doing things, but I'm not sure what a more robust way to hold the flute would be like.

(yeah, I know, I should probably take some lessons, but I'm currently flat broke. /: )

Also -- beginning to be more My House. Have noodled around on both flute and piano. <3 Yay!

and also for anyone else with an eye for Italy, Machiavelli, and an interesting read.

House is over 50% unpacked. Mostly at the point of unpacking books and games and doing a secondary cull. Mostly failing on culling books. I keep finding things that I'm glad I saved.

Debating what to do with the box of Re-Ment, as I like having it around, but it's a thing. The LEGO is likely to head to Bricklink. A bunch of the miniatures games will probably go, too.

Also need to redo the emergency kit, as I discovered that the big emergency kit is really not well designed for me to move, back when we were moving out of the Pegasus house. Most of it is heavy. /:

Still need to install more shelving in the garage and get the garage organized, but it's moving along, slowly.

Today's mission is to get my home business moved to my new home, get groceries, and actually maybe get some work done. I'm being frustrated by wanting to get back to Saijiki Stories, but without the Modbook, that's becoming problematic. I don't have quite enough money for a Cintiq. So ... back to work, hopefully with great alacrity and lots of hours, so I can afford one, and then hopefully back to Saijiki Stories too.

Been tired in the mornings. Would like to not be. Been going to bed on time, so not entirely sure what's wrong. Maybe just that it's socked-in with fog these past few days.

You know it's been insanely hot for way too long when you think your house is freakin' cold in the morning, get up and look at the thermostat, and it reads 74°.

Woot

I hae my Mac up. Email to the masses with new address and phone and all that will come tomorrow. Finally starting to really get this place settled. Yay.

Today I fixed up what I could of the sprinklers, so hopefully the grass will recover from the abuse of not being watered for a week in 100-degree heat, and Mom and I moved the big fish tank over from their house. It has pride of place between the kitchen and family room where we can now watch the Fish Channel 24/7. (We can also watch the Rabbit Channel, but that doesn't seem to come on until about 4pm.)

Mark got the office partially set up tonight, taking advantage of the house pre-wire for ethernet. My Mac is mucho happy. He also earthquake-strapped some of the bookshelves. Yay! And we even had enough time to go up to the top patio and watch the sunset. OMG, I love it here.

Still alive

Just really busy with house stuff, and my Mac is not unboxed yet because the office is a San Francisco earthquake-level disaster area right now. (Just wait 'til the Giants come up to bat!)

We moved in Friday. I promise there will be an email to everyone with the new home and phone info just as soon as the Mac is up; that's where my main address book is. Everything is at the new house except the big fish tank, which I need to call Mom about -- that may be Wednesday.

Since we got the house, we have had the electrician (fixed the wires that were not in conduit), the plumber, the chimney sweep, and the painters (they did the whole exterior, the garage floor, two bathrooms and one bedroom). We're having the plumber back for the water softener on Thursday; had to wait for the garage floor to be dry.

We're probably going to do another cull on our Stuff, though I'm pleased to report that I did in fact get my ludicrous quantities of kitchen stuff to all fit in the new kitchen. Huzzah. I will want pull-out drawers in the pantry, though. It's well-sized but mostly deep, and things will get lost in there if I don't have a way to get at them. The glass cabinets are full of my precious Japanese dishware and are so pretty. <3

I've run a billion loads of laundry since I've been washing all the clothes and quilts and stuff that were in storage. I know there's at least three more quilts hiding in boxes as padding still.

And it's still ridiculously hot here. Unusual, but not totally abnormal. That said, I'd really like to avoid the replay of one of my grade school years where it continued into the 100s right up to Halloween ...

It's a lot easier to schlep stuff in a bigger car. *sigh* Tercel is bitty.

I think I'm about 1/3-1/2 the way done for emptying the apartment of the stuff we need to get over to the house. Is difficult being between places.

Yay!

Dear downstairs neighbor: did you know that your vocal volume goes up 20 decibels when you talk on the phone outside in the middle of the night? I was quite aware that it was 4am, since you kindly told the person on the other end of the line so.

I can't wait to get out of here. Can the last of the closing documents please arrive today?
leanne: (Default)
We're closing on the house today. Yay!

....

My car's check-engine light came on Sunday. I brought it in today, and it's got a plugged catalytic converter. $1680 to repair.

....

I guess we're getting a new car, too. /:

Wahaa.

Twenty-six out of thirty. Two weeks in a row.

Average today was somewhere around 19-20 -- mostly 20s-22s, with a low of 16 (not counting my first end), and a couple of 18s and 19s.

Edited to add: Shot three rounds on, one round off, and got in at least 15 rounds. Ice when I got home, but no Advil. Mildly achy this morning, but not bad.

Rawr!

Grumpy cranky mood is one of those things that Marozzo practice can, and does, fix.

I am looking forward to having proper gear so as to do rapier and more unarmored than just the assault practice, but either way, is nice to hang with SCAdians, is nice to play with swords, is nice to work out.

Now if I could just have my pretty house with my big backyard, so I can do Marozzo there too, instead of just once a week down at Allied Gardens, that would also be nice. I can't practice at the apartment -- it's not wide enough inside (although it is tall enough), and I'm not permitted to carry around weapons outside.
